An emerging paradigm in developing biomaterials for bone tissue regeneration is to create scaffolds with cells or bioactive molecules for vascularized bone tissue regeneration. Toward this, cryogel has been attracted as a delivery carrier of bioactive molecules due to its highly interconnected porous structure. Among these molecules, calcium ion (Ca2+) and oxygen (O2) are well known to enhance osteogenesis and angiogenesis, respectively. Herein, we present gelatin-based cyrogels as dual delivery carriers of Ca2+ and O2 for vascularized bone tissue regeneration. These bioactive cryogels are fabricated by calcium peroxide-mediated reaction and lyophilization. We demonstrate that our cyrogels sustainably release Ca2+ for 28 days and rapidly O2 for 2 days. Notably, Ca2+ released from the cryogels expedite osteogenic cell proliferation. In sum, we suggest that our Ca2+ and O2-releasing cryogels are promising materials for vascularized bone tissue regeneration. |
