The covalent functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) with poly(diethylamino ethyl methacrylate) (PDEAEMA) is successfully achieved through atom transfer radical polymerization. The PDEAEMA grafted on GO imparts the system with a good aqueous solubility and biocompatibility. In addition, the physiochemical properties of GO- PDEAEMA are studied. As a novel nanocargo, GO- PDEAEMA is applied to load a water insoluble anticancer drug, camptothecin (CPT), via π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions. It is manifested that GO- PDEAEMA has a good loading capacity for CPT and the GO- PDEAEMA-CPT complexes show remarkably high cytotoxicity in HeLa cell lines compared to the pure drug. The MTT assay showed no obvious cytotoxicity of GO- PDEAEMA. Thus, the GO- PDEAEMA nanocargo could be a potential stimuli-responsive material for controlled drug delivery and it may improve the bioavailability, efficacy and compliance of the encapsulated drug. |
