Since the 2050 carbon neutrality declaration of many countries in the world, interest in CCUS has been continuously increasing, and in particular, electrochemical CO2 conversion technology is attracting attention as it can directly convert CO2 into fuel or chemical raw materials. Even though a wide range of studies have been reported to improve the efficiency of electrochemical CO2 conversion, many obstacles still exist such as low selectivity/activity of electrocatalysts, insufficient ionic conductivity of membranes, and stability of each component and the overall system. Additionally, CO2 reduction and electrocatalyst degradation mechanisms are not clearly elucidated. Here, the recent research trends of electrochemical CO2 conversion technologies are introduced for the production of economically viable CO2-derived fuels and chemicals as carbon-neutral products. |
