The chain extenders for polyamides are generally bifunctional compounds that are easily prepared, thermally stable, nonvolatile at their melting temperature, and capable of a fast reaction with polymer chain ends, producing nylon with a relatively high molecular weight, and addition-type chain extenders generating no by-products are preferable. Furthermore, mixtures of different groups of chain extenders that can react with the two types of terminal groups have been used. Chain coupling reaction can be easily carried out in an extruder. In this work, we studied the chain extension reaction using recycled nylon 6 chip from waste nets and evaluated the change of molecular weight with coupling agents and filters with different mesh size. Number-average molecular weight was calculated from the intrinsic viscosity using the Mark-Houwink equation. The molecular-weight-increasing effect of the chain extenders on the recycled nylon 6 chip increased with the decrease of mesh size. |
