Cobalt triple-stranded helicates (Co-TSHs) comprising two tetranuclear cobalt clusters interconnected by three isophthalate (PTA) ligands could be employed as primary modules for the construction of higher-order molecular platforms. Assemblies of the Co-TSH modules are, however, merely driven through oxygen sites residing on their cobalt clusters that somewhat restrict their assembly pathway. In this regard, introduction of desired functional moieties (e.g. amino, carboxylate, halogenate, etc.) at specific positions on Co-TSHs is essentially important since this establishes more possible connecting sites. In this presentation, the preparation of various targeted functional Co-TSHs via systematic variation of PTA-derived ligands will be demonstrated. Each unique functional Co-TSH is sequently subjected to higher level of coordination-driven assemblies, resulting in unique hierarchical molecular platforms, including cage and polymeric structures. |
