Polyolefins have attracted considerable attention as packaging materials because of their outstanding light weight, flexibility, strength, transparency, and facile processability. However, polyolefins have partially limited their practical applications because of inevitable intrinsic disadvantage, which is their high permeability to nonpolar gases such as O2, CO2. Herein, we manufacture high barrier films composed of EVOH and LLDPE multilayer films manufactured by co-extrusion process. The films structures were carefully designed to have 1, 2, 4, 8 layers of EVOH while maintaining the overall thickness of EVOH and LLDPE. The oxygen permeability of multilayer films was significantly decreased from 0.1 to 0.01 cc/m2·day·atm as the number of layers increases. In addition, the mechanical properties of multilayer films, such as elongation and toughness, were improved as decrease of each EVOH layer thickness, which suggests a promising possibility of these film in packaging applications. |
