Single layer retarder with negative dispersion (ND) of birefringence was a type of optical film that controls the polarization state to improve the image quality with high contrast and wide field-of-view (FOV). Single layer retarder was fabricated from newly synthesized guest reactive monomer with X-shaped molecule and smectic reactive mesogen as a host. Macroscopic molecular orientation was achieved by host-guest monomers and the oriented structure was frozen by the subsequent photo-polymerizing processes. Their molecular packing structures and optical behaviors were further investigated using the combined techniques of microscopy, scattering, and spectroscopy. The polymer-stabilized host-guest films showed both the ND of birefringence and wide FOV properties. Therefore, it can allow us to develop the flexible optical and electrical devices.
