Self-assembly of surface structure of B4 liquid crystal in nano-confined geometry |
초록 |
The liquid crystal (LC) structure undergoes structural transition as changing the LC film thickness due to the change of boundary conditions felt by LC molecules. Here, we hexagonally generated the individual surface structures of B4 LC phase by simply utilizing the nano-confined geometry. Formation of surface structures was morphologically evolved from individually confined barrel-like structures to hexagonal knit-like estructures as a function of LC amount on the nano-bowls due to the nano-confinement and the surface topography of the nano-bowls. The surface topography-mediated self-assembly made the new self-assembled LC structure that would not be able to be spontaneously produced upon cooling from isotropic to B4 phase, even in same LC molecule. Our resulting achievement is important for not only leading to the formation of the advanced LC nano-structures, but also applications in advanced nano-patterning tools |
