We introduce a new method to improve the electrochemical properties of Ni(OH)2 in the specific capacitance value, rate capability, and cycle life by simply electrodepositing Ni nanoparticles (Ni-NPs) on the as-prepared electrode. The Ni-NPs are only deposited near the contact area between active materials and a metal plate current collector by allowing for the tight binding between active materials and a current collector, which allows us to consider Ni-NPs supporting current collectors (SCCs). The Ni-NP based SCCs (NiSCCs) reduce the contact resistance and improve the conductivity of the electrode, which decreases the “dead volume” in the active materials. As a result, the NiSCC supported Ni(OH)2 pseudocapacitor on a plate metal substrate achieves a capacitance of 1,264 F/g with a stability of 75% and 72% after 10,000 cycles and at a high current density of 20 A/g, respectively, without using expensive 3D-conductive current collectors. |
