It is difficult to avoid microdefect formation caused by the hydrothermal growths and calcination processes when fabricating zeolite membranes. Defects less than 1%, which provide non-selective pathways, will considerably deteriorate the separation performance based on the inherent molecular-sieve effect of the zeolite membrane. we suggest a simple and reliable method to block defects using water-soluble dye molecules. Because the size of dye molecules is about 1 nm, they cannot diffuse into the zeolitic pores and selectively access the defects. To demonstrate dye-based defect healing, we chose SSZ-13 membrane of CHA (chabazite) type zeolite with some degree of defects and investigated the effect of defect healing on the separation performance under dry and wet conditions. Since the defects were gradually filled by the dye molecules, both CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation performances were increased. |
