We have investigated the proton hopping and diffusion behavior of PSS-b-PMB block copolymers containing ionic liquids (ILs). A set of nonstoichiometric imidazolium ([Im])-based ILs were synthesized by varying the type and the composition of ILs. Pulsed-field gradient spin echo NMR experiments suggest that fast prton hopping is facilitated by increasing number of protic sites in [Im] cations. It has also been revealed that higher [Im] contents in the ILs increase the amounts of proton hopping compared to vehicular diffusion, attributed to the formation of strong H-bonding network, as confirmed by the high proton transference number. The type of anion significantly affects the activation barrier for proton conduction in IL-containing sulfonated polymers by influencing ion cluster formation behavior. This work should provide valuable insights on factors affecting proton transport properties of IL-containing polymers toward advanced high temperature fuel cell membranes. |
