Effect of E-beam treatment on activated carbon fiber for NO gas sensing |

Electron beam (E-beam) irradiation can cleave C-C and C-H bonds on polymer surfaces. Therefore, it is expected that E-beam irradiation is a viable technology as surface treatment for improving carbon materials textural properties. In this study, we treated pitch-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) in hydrogen peroxide using E-beam irradiation to improve nitrogen monoxide (NO) gas sensing ability as an electrode material of gas sensor. The specific specific surface area of ACFs treated E-beam with 400 kGy increased from 885 m2/g to 1160 m2/g without any changes in structural property and functional group. The sample treated with E-beam irradiation of 400 kGy has approximately resistive response of 4.5% and response time was remarkably reduced from 360 s to 210 s. This result shows that E-beam irradiation in hydrogen peroxide can be applied to improvement of carbon material’s textural properties for a gas sensor electrode material. |
