Sea urchin-like polystyrene/polyaniline (PS/PANI) particles were fabricated by seed swelling polymerization. The aniline was adsorbed onto pre-synthesized PS spheres due to π–π* stacking interaction and polymerization was carried out from the surface after adding ferric salt as an oxidant. Morphology and characterizations of successfully synthesized particles were observed through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermal gravimetry analysis. Electrorheological (ER) fluid was prepared by dispersing the PS/PANI particle in silicone oil and ER properties such as shear viscosity, shear stress and yield stress were investigated by optical microscope and rotational rheometer. The suspension showed ER effect which can vary in solid-like state from the liquid-like state by an external electric field. Dielectric spectra measured by using a LCR meter were correlated well with its ER performance. |
