In this study, we report a new type of electrorheological (ER) fluid with various colors. Particularly, these ER fluids were consisted of multi-layered mica/TiO2/SiO2 pearlescent pigments. The colors of pearlescent pigments-based ER fluids were manipulated by varying the thickness of TiO2 and SiO2 layers. In specific, the colors of ER fluids changed as white, blue, violet, orange, and green with the increasing TiO2 materials with high refractive index. On the other hand, ER performances were lowered with increasing amount of TiO2 owing to the lower polarizability compared to Mica base material. Accordingly, colorful ER fluids with different ER performances were successfully synthesized by simple approach of maneuvering the sol-gel conditions. Hence, we expect that these colored ER fluids may applicable to the developments of smart stress controlling system selecting the suitable ER fluids to specific fields by confirming the color of the ER fluid. |
