Discotic liquid crystal (DLC) materials have been attracting increasing attention due to their particular transport properties related to electron and hole transfer, energy migration, etc. Such DLC molecules have been known to form both nematic and columnar mesophases. The hydrogen bonding is one of the powerful tools for assembling molecules and building organized molecular structures. The objective of this study is to synthesize a new type of hydrogen-bonded DLCs based on the self-assembly of pheripheral units (H-bond acceptor) around a core molecule (H-bond donor). 1,3,5-Trihydroxybenzene (phloroglucinol, PG) and 1,3,5-Trihydroxyphenylbenzene (THPB) were used as the core molecules. Three stilbazole derivatives (Alkoxystilbazoles (ASn), alkoxybenzoyloxystilbazoles (ABSn), cyanoalkoxystilbazoles (CASn); n is the number of carbon in the alkyl chain), Alkoxy-Isoqunoline(AIQn), and alkoxystilylqunoline(ASQn) were synthesized for the peripheral units. The existence of the hydrogen-bonded complexes was studied by FT-IR spectroscopy. The mesomorphic properties of complexes were investigated by DSC, POM and X-ray diffraction. Liquid crystalline phases of the hydrogen-bonded complexes were different from those of the peripheral units and the complexes prepared from two different components behaved as a single component. |
