Synthesis and Properties of Polyfluorene Derivatives with Ferroelectric Liquid Crystalline Moieties |

Liquid crystalline (LC) conjugated polymers have been studied widely because of their multifunctional electric and optical properties. Anisotropic electrical conductivity and linearly polarized luminescence can be generated by macroscopic alignment of the LC conjugated polymers through application of external forces. However, the high viscosity of polymers makes it difficult to achieve a quick control of the alignment and a dynamic switching of the anisotropic functionalities. Therefore it may be desirable for the LC conjugated polymer to have ferroelectricity. The ferroelectricity enables the quick response to the electric field by means of a strong interaction between spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystalline (FLC) moieties and electric field. In this study, we synthesized and investigated polyfluorene derivatives with FLC groups to combine the functionalities of quick responsive ferroelectric liquid crystals and strong blue emitting polyfluorene. |
