High impact polystyrene grafted with triphenyl phosphate (TPP@HIPS) was synthesized by radical reaction method. Grafted TPP was localized in resins and showed nonvolatile characteristics, resulting in enhanced flame retarding properties of TPP@HIPS. Prepared TPP@HIPS was prepared as the test specimens through extruding and injection molding process. Structural evidences of grafting were confirmed by using spectroscopic analyses of solid-state P31-NMR and FT-IR. Thermal analyses showing fusion of TPP and char formation were conducted by using DSC and TGA. UL94 vertical flame retardant test was also performed to prove flame retarding properties of TPP@HIPS. In this study, it was convinced that flame retarding HIPS of UL94 V0 grade could be prepared by grafting TPP on HIPS backbone.
