A series of polymer composites comprising of cycloaliphatic epoxy resin and modified ground silica fillers surface passivated with organosilane coupling agents were fabricated to evaluate the hydrophobicity. Three different silanes, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPS), and tridecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyl trimethoxysilane (FTEOS) were used and the amount of silane coupling agent were optimized for surface treatment of ground silicas. The surface passivated silica particles were characterized by solid state 29Si NMR and XPS analysis. Flexural strength of the composites ranged from 113 to 118, and morphological analysis via SEM. Wettability of each specimen was measured using contact angle analysis. The neat epoxy’s contact angle was measured 101°, and those others composite’s contact angle increased with increase in filler contents. The FTEOS treated silica/epoxy composites exhibited higher contact angle (120°). |
