Allium sativum L., is commonly known as garlic, family Alliaceae. Mercury removal efficiencies of garlic were tested after 1 and 20 days, when it has been grown in mercury contaminated solution. The highest percentage, 100%, of mercury uptake was observed after 20 days. However, even for the 100% mercury uptake sample, 35.7% of removed mercury was transferred to air. This study suggests that inorganic mercury (mercury sulfate) form can be easily removed by sulfate reduction enzyme in the garlic root. |
