Adhesion evaluation of 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene/methyl 5-norbornene-2-carboxylate (ENB/MNC) for self-healing applications |

In current self-healing systems, the improvement in healing efficiency requires improving adhesion of the polymerized healing agent to the polymer matrix. In this work, 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) was selected as healing agent due to fast ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reaction even at low catalyst loading and wide temperature range for applications. Methyl 5-norbornene-2-carboxylate (MNC) successfully acts as a noncovalent adhesion promoter which can form hydrogen bond via its ester group with amine and hydroxyl groups of epoxy resins. DSC study indicated that MNC can copolymerize with ENB under 2nd generation Grubbs' catalyst. The resulting copolymer possesses better adhesion to epoxy matrix relative to poly(ENB) alone. The microcapsules of ENB/MNC monomers were prepared using a melamine-urea-formaldehyde encapsulation procedure and used for in situ self-healing experiments. Improved healing efficiency was observed for ENB/MNC blend as a healing agent. |
