We herein report that ionic liquid-assisted ball milling of iron precursors in the absence of any reagent resulted in the scalable production of crystalline Fe2O3 with a favourable morphology (high surface area of 202 m2 g‒1 and pore size of 40 nm) for supercapacitor applications. The unique properties of ILs, which include low volatility, suitability for structural design, good thermal and chemical stabilities, and high ionic conductivities, have led to novel morphologies and interesting properties such as solubility, chemical reactivity, and charge transfer. The as–synthesized Fe2O3 had excellent electrochemical performance in terms of specific capacitance, high rate capability, and excellent cycle life. |
