Synthesis and Characterization of Methacrylate Polymers Having Renewable Cardanol Moiety for Surface Coating Application |

A series of methacrylate copolymers having cardanolmoiety (PHMs) were prepared via radical polymerization using 2-hydroxy-3-cardanylpropyl methacrylate (HCPM) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) as monomers. The cardanol-containing monomer (HCPM) was synthesized by a reacting cardanol with glycidyl methacrylate in the presence of base catalyst. The PHM coatings could be prepared using a simple drop casting followed by UV irradiation because the unsaturated hydrocarbon chain of cardanol moieties in PHMs were oxidized to form crosslinked structure during the UV curing process. The PHM coatings showed high gloss, good transparency to the visible light. It was found that the PHM coatings exhibit excellent antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli even when they have HCPM moieties as small as 10 mol% in the polymers. |
