Evaluation Method of Energy Expenditure using Poly(L-lactic acid) and Polyurethane Hybrid Pressure Sensors |

In recent times, many researchers have focused on studying the shear-piezoelectric properties of poly(l-lactic acid) [PLA] as a replacement of commercially well-established piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) [PVDF]. Piezoelectricity in PLA arises from its unique helical structure having chiral molecular conformation and different optical properties for each substituent groups. In the present study, electrospun PLA nanofiber web based sensors were studied for their piezoelectric behavior and compared with that of PVDF nanofiber web based sensors. A hybrid sensor was also fabricated using PLA and polyurethane (PU) nanofiber webs and studied for their piezocapacitive behavior. The piezoelectric and piezocapacitive signal obtained from the hybrid sensor embedded in the running insole was used to propose an evaluation method to calculate the energy expenditure while walking and running.
