This work reports the preparation of hydrophobic mesoporous silica particles (MSPs) using the modification with the non-fluorine alkyl silanes. Alkyl silanes were grafted on the surface of the MSPs as a function of alkyl chain lengths such as propyltriethoxysilane (PTES, C3), octyltriethoxysilane (OTES, C8), dodecyltriethoxysilane (DDTES, C12), and octadecyltriethoxysilane (ODTES, C18). Moreover, the silanes grafting procedures were achieved by various different methods such as pH changes (pH 0, pH 4, pH 6, pH 8, and pH 13), different solvents (acetic acid, toluene, and hydrochloric acid), concentration of silanes (0 M, 0.12 M, 0.24 M, and 0.36 M), reaction time (1 day, 2 day, 3 day, and 4 day), and reaction temperature (25 ℃, 40 ℃). The hydrophobicity of the alkyl silane-grafted MSPs were measured by the water contact angle, and the contact angle decreased in the order of C18 >C12 >C8 >C3 when using low pH and high concentration silanes. In addition, ODTES grafted MSPs showed the highest contact angle at 102. 1 ° (MSP contact angle was 25.2 °). Furthermore, hydrophobic surface modification was not signficantly affected by reaction time and temperature. |
