We report on a new fabrication method of high performance polyamide (PA) thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes using dual-layer slot coating (DSC). DSC simultaneously spreads two reactive monomer solutions to synthesize the PA layer at the free interface, which is then attached on the porous support to fabricate a TFC membrane. This is an economical one-step manufacturing process which is advantageous over the conventional two-step interfacial polymerization (IP) process. The DSC-assembled PA layer has a thinner and smoother structure and exhibits a more wettable and less negatively charged surface than the PA layer prepared via conventional IP method. DSC enables the fabrication of an extremely thin (~ 9 nm) and dense PA layer despite using very low MPD concentration, which is not possible with conventional IP. Importantly, the DSC-assembled membrane show excellent water flux and NaCl rejection, outperforming the conventional IP control and commercial RO membranes. |
