Synthesis of Hydroxyapatite Crystals Using Modified Chitosan-Capped Gold Nanoparticles as a Scaffold |

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) [Ca10 (PO4) 6(OH) 2] nanocrystals of controlled geometry were chemically fabricated on the surface of N-acylated chitosan stabilized gold nanoparticles (Nac-6-Au) by in-situ precipitation technique. Physico-chemical characterization (UV-vis, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDX and TEM) of N-acylated chitosan-gold-HAp (Nac-6-Au-HAp) nanocomposite revealed that nucleation was initiated and promoted through the oxygen atom of polymer and dependent on nucleation time. Control experiments using uncapped gold nanoparticles and pure Nac-6-Au indicated that the surface of Nac-6-Au played a key role in inducing and directing the growth of HAp nanocrystals.
