Carbon nanotube (CNT) is used as a nanofiller to enhance the properties of polymer materials due to its outstanding mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. However, CNTs exist as bundles due to van der Waals force between them. A lot of works have been performed to solve this problem. Chemically modified CNTs show good dispersion but deteriorate the intrinsic properties of CNT due to breakage of sp2 bond. Physical modification with low MW surfactant, e.g. SDS, renders good dispersion but shows adverse effect on mechanical properties of nanocomposites. In this study, we introduce polydopamine-coated CNT (PDA-CNT), prepare PS/PDA-CNT nanocomposites by using latex technology, and investigate their morphology and rheological, mechanical and electrical properties. The nanocomposites show good dispersion in polystyrene matrix, enhanced electrical conductivity and good mechanical properties, compared to the nanocomposites prepared by other surface-modified CNTs. |
