Aryl boronic acids that were used as important building blocks in organic synthesis have been widely employed in carbohydrate detection, H2O2 sensing, protease enzyme inhibitors, anticancer agents, and drug delivery systems. We present a new fluorescent probe (1) based on the fast displacement reaction of arylboronic acid with inorganic and organic mercury species in purely aqueous solution and live cells. 1 recognized Hg2+ and methylmercury by turn-on responses through the irreversible chemical reaction of the arylboronic acid moiety with the mercury species. 1 showed promising sensing properties for mercury ions such as low detec-tion limit (1.82 nM, 0.36 ppb), high selectivity and sensitivity, fast reaction (< 2 mins), and operation in purely aqueous solutions and live cell. |
