Norbornene can be polymerized by ring-opening metathesis, radical, and vinyl-type polymerization. Although vinyl-polynorbornene has good thermal stability, high optical transparency, low water absorption, and low dielectric constant, significant improvements are desired in solubility, mechanical and adhesive properties. In this study, pure exo-norbornene derivatives are synthesized, and poly(norbornene-exo-2,3-dimethyl acetate) and poly(norbornene-exo-2,3-dimethyl propionate) are polymerized as a vinyl-type in high yield. Increasing monomer/catalyst ratio produces high molecular weight polymers with broad molecular weight distributions. The polymers show good solubility in general organic solvents. Detailed comparison of physical properties with those of unsubstituted polynorbornene will be presented.
