A simple method to self-bias a center-clamped ME laminate composite |

We introduce here a simple method to generate self-biased magnetoelectric (SME) response in a center-clamped ME laminate composite. It is based on shifting the magnetic hysteresis loop of the magnetostrictive layer of the laminate composite by applying an external magnetic field to the laminate other than the magnetic bias field (HDC). We have worked out mathematical formulation to calculate the optimum magnitude of the pre-applied magnetic field in order to obtain maximum value of SME coefficient (αH=0) at HDC = 0. This method is verified experimentally for Metglas/PZT/Metglas and Metglas/PZT/Ni laminate composites, with an optimum length of 6 cm, at resonant and off-resonant frequency. A high value of αH=0 = 58 V/cm Oe was obtained at HDC = 0. The magnitude of αH=0 could be tuned by changing the direction of the pre-applied magnetic field.
