Recently, researchers have studied the removal of heavy metals by orange, mango, and lemon peels which use various mechanisms, such as adsorption, ion exchange, and precipitation. A highly efficient biosorbent material for heavy metals was prepared from lemon peel (LP). The virgin and chemically modified DLP powder adsorbed 7.65 g Hg/g and 12.30 g Hg/g, respectively. The biosorption capacity of lemon peel improved approximately 30% by chemical modification. The proposed mechanism suggests that mercury ion is first adsorbed on the surface of biomass and then reacted with the carboxylic groups of pectin. |
