Polyimide powders can be used in manufacturing lightweight moulding parts where precision, thermal, and dimensional stability are critical such as bearings, sealing because of their excellent thermal, mechanical properties, and high glass transition temperature. However, polyimide powders are generally obtained in toxic solvents such as dimethylformamide (DMF), N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), which are hazardous to the environment. Moreover, these organic solvents lead to high production cost. To solve the problems, we developed a green method to synthesize polyimide powders using distilled water as solvent. In this study, we compared different methods to prepare polyimide powders using organic solvents and distilled water. Dog-bone shaped specimens were manufactured by compression moulding method and their tensile strength was measured. The results were explained based on the shape and size of the polyimide particles. |
