Poly(N-vinylformamide) (PVF), a water-soluble polymer with biocompatibility, is one of the most important precursor of poly(vinyl amine) (PVAm) due to the best hydrolysis ability to PVAm. However, there have been few studies about controlled radical polymerization of non-conjugated N-vinyl monomers because the generated radical species are highly reactive due to lack of resonance stabilization. In this study, we synthesized PVF through photo-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. To achieve successful photo-initiated RAFT process, it is required to use photo-chemically stable chain transfer agent (CTA), along with additional photoinitiator, BAPO. On testing various xanthate CTAs for thermal RAFT of NVF were identified as an effective RAFT agent for the polymerization of PVF. Detailed results of photo-initiated RAFT process will be discussed. |
