Synthesizing bentonite in nano scale is an important process that can improve the physical properties of drilling mud. Bentonite increases the viscosity of the drilling mud, shear thinning behavior, and conducting fluid loss. Here, in situ method were used to make nano bentonite in a more efficient way than previous reported ball milling method. The optimum conditions for synthesizing nano bentonite based on the existing homogenizer treatment were found. In addition, in order to compare the nano-bentonite produced by the homogenizer treatment with the conventional ball milling method, the size, the surface charge of the particles, and rheological properties were compared. It was confirmed that 3 wt% of nano bentonite treated with homogenizer has viscosity as high as 5 wt% of general bentonite. This research has significance as a process that synthesizes nano bentonite in large quantities and can be used immediately. |
