The effect of the composition of poly(acrylonitrile-co-itaconic acid)s (PAI)s on the behaviors of carbonized materials was investigated. Characterization tools such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Raman spectroscopy, 4-point probe method were employed to understand the properties of the carbon materials. Excess amount of IA in PAI led to a low initiation temperature for the cyclization reaction during stabilization, which also resulted in a low concentration of the cyclized ring and high concentration of unconjugated C=O. Although the excess content of IA resulted in a low carbon yield, the growth of carbon basal plane was enhanced, affording improved electronic properties.
