Self-assembled chiral nanopore arrays with bent-core liquid crystals |

We introduced a novel nano-fabrication system using bent-shaped liquid crystals (LCs) as nano building blocks to achieve functional 3D- nanostructures. Bent-core LCsself-assemble into very unique superstructure called as helical nanofilaments (HNFs),which is occuredby the highly restrictive molecular packing process based on the molecular geometries.Under nano-confinement using porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film, individualHNFs readily grow in linear nanoscale pores generatingchiral nanoporous structures. Both helical pitch and width of chiral pores are tuneable with sub-nanometerprecision by varying the pore size of AAObased on quantitatively controlled surface anchoring.Such hierarchically self-assembled chiral nanopore arrays can be used as a 3D-nanopatterning template with the other guest materials confined in nanoscale interstitial volumes between the HNFs and AAO, which is potentially used for chiral separation. |
