Phenylboronic acid-functionalized pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) which specifically and reversibly bind to glucose were utilized as a glucose sensor. Conventional glucose sensing technologies are generally invasive; thus, those have a potential for unexpected infections, toxicity, and pain. Herein, we designed and synthesized a glucose-sensitive adhesive that can detect glucose in a non-invasive manner from sweat. First, an acrylic scaffold adhesive having a glycidyl side chain was synthesized through free-radical polymerization. Simple one-step post-modification (i.e., nucleophilic addition of 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid to the glycidyl group) allows providing boronic acid-functionality. The glucose level in the smart adhesive can be quantified by the established colorimetric assay. Thus, the glucose level can be visualized through a color change in adhesive, which is expected to be an attractive alternative that can substitute the conventional glucose sensing methodology. |
