A study on the mild, simple, and cost-effective synthesis of polyphenylsilsesquioxanes (PPSQ) using dual-purpose catalyst about hydrolysis and condensation has been conducted. By differing the solvent and amount of water in this synthesis, control of Mw and structure, either ladder-like or polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS)-type structures was achieved. The different synthetic conditions conveyed an interdependence of the solvent polarity and water amount on the rate of hydrolysis, Mw, and structure. By varying the solvent used, ladder-like PPSQs of a wide range of Mw (5000-14000 g/mol) were synthesized; and by varying the amount of water, control of ladder-like and POSS-type silsesquioxanes was attained. Chemical compositions, molecular weights, and structures of the obtained PPSQs were characterized using 1H NMR, 29Si NMR, FT-IR, GPC and MALDI-TOF. |
