The technology of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) has been dramatically developed to a level of expectation of various applications such as mobile power sources, residential power systems and fuel cell vehicles. However, the outlook for the commercialization of PEMFC fairly depends on the price of fuel cell system, especially Pt, one of the most expensive elements. It is therefore highly required to replace Pt with cheaper materials. As an alternative oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) electrocatalysts, Pd has been paid attention recently owing to its advantages such as relatively low price compared to Pt and similar element properties to Pt. Here, we discussed the activities of several Pd alloy catalysts for ORR and HOR in order to substitute Pt in the PEMFC. |
