Trifluoromethyl group is known as an effective activating group for nucleophilic nitro displacement reaction even at relatively high temperature due to the inertness of perfluoroalkyl groups to nitrite ions. Another advantage of trifluoromethyl group as an activating group for SNAr reaction is that it is an effective way to incorporate fluorines into the polymer chains, which provides some desirable properties such as low dielectric constant, low moisture absorption, good solubility, and good transparency. In this study, several new monomers containing nitro leaving group and trifluoromethyl groups were synthesized and polymerized to poly(biphenylene oxide)s through SNAr reaction. The monomer syntheses, polymerization reactions, and properties of the synthesized polymers will be presented. |
