In order to obtain flame retardant epoxy resin, [10-(2,5-dihydroxyphenyl)-9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phospha phenanthrene-10-oxide] and [polydimethyl siloxane, hydroxyl terminated] are incorporated into a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA). Melamine containing phosphorous and silicon was also used as a or curing agent for flame retardant epoxy resin. The thermal and flame retardant properties of the resulting materials were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), limiting oxygen index(LOI) and cone calorimeter. This study is focused on the effect of the contents of phosphorous and silicon on the thermal and flame retardant properties of the epoxy resin to find the optimal content of phosphorous and silicon in epoxy resin.
