Thermally expandable microcapsules(TEMs) consist of a crosslinked polymer as a shell encapsulating low molecular weight hydrocarbon as a blowing agent. Upon heating above Tg of the shell polymer, they expands in volume by more than hundred times, and upon cooling a hollow and extremely light plastic sphere can be remained. Such expandable microcapsules have diverse industrial applications including thermal and electrical insulating materials, and light-weight materials. In this study, we synthesized TEMs consisting of crosslinked polyacrylonitrile copolymer as a shell and isopentane as a core by suspension polymerization technique. Effects of amount and type of crosslinkers on the thermal and expansion properties of the TEMs were investigated. |
