It is greatly important to tailor the properties of crystalline pharmaceuticals by crystallization. Adding a small amount of polymer as an additive during crystallization could tailor the various properties. From the polymer-directed crystallization, we observed the changed particle morphology and properties. The crystal sizes of catechin with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose(HPMC), polyethyleneimine branched(PEI) and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) were reduced. The crystal melting of catechin with PEI was not observed and catechin with PVA was decreased by about 12℃ comparing to the pure catechin crystals. In FTIR investigations, the crystal of catechin with PVA seemed to have a strong interaction between PVA and catechin. Also, catechin with PEI showed the sustained release. Those results might be affected by the surface adsorption of polymers onto the surfaces of growing crystals. This method is very simple and it can be used for tailoring a lot of other active ingredients in many areas. |
