A Novel Synthetic Cellular-Structured Polymeric Ion Composite for Ultrasensitive Skin Sensor |

Electronic skin designed to emulate sensing properties of human skin, has been explored for various applications including prosthetics, human-machine interfaces, and health monitoring devices. Particularly, biomimetics has led new concepts in material design and device structure with the aim of mimicking human skin. Herein, we present a novel synthetic cellular-structured polymeric ion composite that forms the ion-confined silica microstructures inspired from structure and mechanotransduction of living cell and explore its potential application in piezo-capacitive sensor. The confinement and stimulus-driven pumping of ions through silica-polymer nanochannels emulate structure and function of living cell. Interestingly, it results in high sensitivity consistently in low-pressure (42kPa-1 @10kPa) and high pressure regimes (5kPa-1 @100kPa). We believe this novel material provides an empathetic solution to overcome the traditional issues associated sensitivity and pressure sensing range. |
