Metal Ion-Complexed Zwitterionic Polymeric Additives for Implantable Medical Devices |

Thrombus formation and infection by implantable medical device still have been unsolved problems. Here, we designed a series of metal ion-complexed zwitterionic polyurethane (m-zPU) additives to confer anti-thrombogenic and anti-microbial activities to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Metal ions including Ag, Cu, Zn and Ce, were selected as candidates for complexation with zwitterionic polymer. Our results demonstrate that addition of m-zPU significantly lower protein adsorption and larger zone of bacterial inhibition than pure PVC. These results suggest the m-zPU would be useful for implantable medical devices. |
