Insight into the mechanism of Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal by magnetic biosorbent precursor to Chlorella vulgaris |

Chlorella vulgaris (CV) cultured in Jaworski’s Medium was incorporated with magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles in order to obtain magnetic biomaterial. The surface morphology of the materials was characterized with the help of SEM images and the surface functional groups of the solids were characterized by FT-IR analysis. The magnetic-CV was further utilized for the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions under batch reactor operations. A high percentage removal was observed in a wide region of pH and initial metal concentrations. A rapid uptake of Cd(II)/Pb(II) by the magnetic-CV was controlled with the intra-particle diffusion mechanism. The effect of background electrolyte concentrations study suggests that Cd(II) ions were less specifically sorbed whereas the Pb(II) ions were specifically sorbed by the surface functional groups. Furthermore, sorption mechanism was discussed with FT-IR and XPS analyses and it was demonstrated that Cd(II) mainly bound to the carboxyl or hydroxyl groups whereas Pb(II) mostly sorbed through the amino group present on the magnetic-CV. |
