In current study, the bio-sorption of Pb+2, Cu+2, Cd+2, and Mn+2 was observed for microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. Batch experiments were performed with 2, 4 and 6 mg/L metal concentration with C. vulgaris cells grown in Jaworski's medium for a period of 12 days. Removal of Cd+2, Cu+2, Pb+2 was incomplete and did not exceed 40%. Furthermore, the presence of Mn+2 did not inhibit C. vulgaris growth at applied concentrations. Algal treatment systems allow simultaneous removal of heavy metals and recovery of nutrients. The algal biomass can be harvested and utilized for production of biofuels and other valuable products. |
