Ferritin is a natural protein nanoparticle playing crucial roles in iron storage and release in vivo. Recently, ferritin has been reported as a biomaterial for biomedical applications using its intrinsic biological and chemical properties. Here, we demonstrated the effect of ferritin on self-renewal and differentiation of human neural stem cells (hNSCs). Cells were treated with ferritin during neurosphere formation under self-renewal condition and the neurospheres were then allowed to differentiate spontaneously without mitogenic factors. As a result, more uniform size of neurospheres were generated and self-renewal property of hNSCs was enhanced in ferritin-treated group. In addition, accelerated neuronal differentiation was also observed. This study suggests the potential use of ferritin in neural stem cell-mediated biomedical applications.
