A Comparative Study of Oligomeric Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Series |

New class of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) based on cyclic tetramer siloxanes with pendant chiral mesogenic groups have been synthesized. By a comparative study with their corresponding monomers, the influence of oligomerization on phase behavior and ferroelectric properties have been investigated. Oligomerization leads to a significant stabilization of FLC phases through increase of the clearing temperatures and suppression of the crystallization. These new oligosiloxanes showed the response times in the microsecond region, comparable with their monomer and conventional low molecular weight ferroelectric liquid crystals. Based on these data, their potential application for display will be presented. |
