제목 BSA fouling characterization of an ion-exchange membrane system using an electrical impedance spectroscopy
초록 BSA fouling characterization of an ion-exchange membrane system was investigated using an electrical impedance spectroscopy in terms of conductance and capacitance as a function of frequency. Conductance of the ion-exchange membranes examined in this study can be obtained from the difference between the conductance of the ion-exchange membrane system and that of the solution itself measured at high concentrations above 0.1 M KCl, because of the high conductance of the ion-exchange membranes. It was observed that strong dispersions in capacitance occurred below approximately 1000 Hz due to the phenomenological impedance of the reference electrodes. The impedance corresponding to the BSA fouling phenomena was overshadowed by the strong dispersion. However, using the subtraction technique suggested in this study, the fouling effect was identified in both conductance and capacitance. As the membrane fouling became more serious, the conductance and capacitance decreased by the growth of the BSA fouling layer on the surface of the anion-exchange membrane.
